After School Athletics at Keys School

Philosophy

Keys School after-school athletic program focuses on teaching beginning skills, components of team play, and the enjoyment of competitive play with our neighboring independent schools. We emphasize sportsmanship, team relationships and coaching in a positive manner.

Players come to practice and games with a positive attitude and work hard to improve skills and understanding of the game. They encourage and support teammates. Players treat everyone with respect and model good sports citizenship.

Sports and Teams

Our program is open to all middle school students. Teams compete with other schools as part of the West Bay Athletic League (15 schools). We do not conduct tryouts and do not “cut” players.

Practices & Games

After school practices for all teams are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Field practice sites include Ventura Field (behind middle school campus), Hoover Park (behind lower school campus), local parks or courts, and in our home gym for basketball and volleyball. Games are scheduled weekdays with an occasional basketball or flag football game on Saturday. Keys does not have a home playing field so all field games are played at other league schools in Los Altos, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, San Mateo, San Jose, Woodside and Portola Valley. Basketball and volleyball games are split between our gym and other schools. Full game and practice schedules are generally released two weeks prior to the first practice.

Parent Support

Keys expect parents to model polite behavior and show support for effort and good play. Keys’ coaching staff and referees are treated with respect at all times. Most teams require parental assistance coordinating transportation, team communication, snacks, etc.

Athletic Director

The Athletic Director is responsible for managing the Keys School After-School Sports Program. Responsibilities include; recruitment of players, managing rosters and team formations, hiring and supervising coaches and assistant coaches, attending league meetings, facilitating player transportation, uniform distribution, communicating rules and schedules, coaching and assistant coaching where needed, and coordinating communication with coaches, parents, and school staff regarding the program.
